Quimbaya

They used the cotton-wool tree profusely.

The Quimbaya were federated nations which lived in the center of the nation, among the softly rolling hills between the Cauca and Magdalena Rivers, in the midst of tropical heat and fog. They used the cotton-wool tree profusely. They were miner, great weavers and fine potters who expressed their magic plastically; as prodigious goldsmiths, they produced the most humanistic, refined and elegant goldwork of pre-Hispanic America.

They were deeply involved in the rites of enlightenment, a high religious principle, whose symbol is the spiral. They created men such as the Corinto, with phallic connotations and other works such as plaques with a theatrical air.

Calima

They gave the mask its highest degree of expression

The nation developed around the Calima River, which flows in to the Pacific Ocean at the southwest part of the country, in the midst of a luxurious tropical environment. The Calima were merchants, potters whose products seemed almost magical as well as refined goldsmiths who produced sumptuous works.

They used gold profusely, even converting it into a ceremonial warrior's disguise. They gave the mask its highest degree of expression, showing through it their complex cosmogony; they created sophisticated magic rites which they expressed in their art. They favored the line, the arabesque and gold sheet for their artistic expression and plastic magic.
