San Agustin

The Agustinians were as placid as the Sumerians

The San Agustin culture was located in the southern part of Colombian Andes. The Agustinians were notable farmers, extraordinary sculptors and creators of a larger and complex cultural structure. They are know throughout the Americas for having created in stone their mythic, military, civilian and religious world, in which a dead cult and water rites stand out.

The Agustinians were as placid as the Sumerians and communicated frequently with their neighbors.

Cauca

Predilection for birds and their symbolism.

The Cauca culture developed in a small sector of the splendid Cauca River Valley, near Popayan. They were farmers, potters and goldsmiths who showed a predilection for birds and their symbolism.

Although they were surrounded by powerful styles of art, they created one of their own, which is identified by the eagle form and the caricuri nose-ring.

Tierradentro

They created the only underground mausoleums in the Americas

The Tierradentro culture inhabited the hillsides of the central ranges of the Andes, which is distinguished by its exuberant and beautiful topography.

The Tierradentro were farmers, potters, sculptors and architects. Their principal preoccupation was that which was related to funerals. For their cult to the dead, they created the only underground mausoleums in the Americas, which were sculpted in stone and in which the serpent reigned.
